UK Local Citation Sites: The 2026 List That Actually Works

UK local citation sites are directories, review platforms and registers where your business name, address and phone number appear publicly. Google cross references those mentions to confirm your business is real and located where you claim. For most UK businesses, roughly 15 to 25 accurate, consistent listings across the right tiers does the job. Beyond that, returns fall away sharply.

That number is going to annoy anyone who has just downloaded a list of 100 directories. Good. Let’s talk about why the list length was never the point.

The tiered list, ordered by what actually moves rankings

Tier Where to list Why it matters Cost
1. Search and map platforms Google Business Profile, Bing Places for Business, Apple Business Connect, Facebook These feed the local pack, Maps, and increasingly the AI assistants that pull from Bing’s index. Non negotiable. Free
2. UK consumer directories Yell, Thomson Local, FreeIndex, 192.com, Cylex UK, Hotfrog, Scoot, Touch Local Recognisable UK brands with real traffic. These are the corroboration layer Google checks your details against. Free listings, paid upsells offered
3. Review and lead platforms Trustpilot, Yelp UK, Bark, Checkatrade, Nextdoor Reviews feed prominence directly. Some also generate genuine enquiries. Free to subscription, varies by sector
4. Sector registers Gas Safe Register, FMB, RICS, SRA, FCA Register, CQC, ICO register Vetted, sector specific, and heavily trusted. Competitors can’t spam their way in. Membership or registration fees apply
5. Local institutional Council Trading Standards trader schemes, CTSI Approved Code, Chamber of Commerce, BID directories The genuinely local layer almost nobody builds. Council domains carry weight and consumer trust. Varies by scheme

Work top down. Finish Tier 1 completely before touching Tier 2. A business with four perfect Tier 1 listings and zero directory presence outperforms one with 80 sloppy directory entries.

Google’s own guidance describes local results as a combination of relevance, distance and prominence, with prominence shaped partly by how many sites reference your business and how many reviews you have. Citations sit inside prominence. They’re corroboration, not a ranking lever you can pull directly.

Why Tier 5 is the one everyone skips

Here’s the layer that separates a serious UK citation profile from a bulk submission job.

Citizens Advice tells consumers to start their search for a trustworthy trader at their local council website, looking for approved traders or Trading Standards listings. Think about that. An official body is directing real buyers to council run directories, and almost no agency list includes them.

The CTSI Approved Code Scheme identifies businesses following Codes of Practice approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, and it’s a criminal offence for a non member to display the logo falsely. A citation on a domain like that is not something a competitor replicates in an afternoon.

Council schemes such as Bromley’s Trading Standards Checked vet applicants on compliance history, credit checks and public liability insurance before accepting them. That vetting is exactly why the resulting listing means something.

Why Tier 5 is the one everyone skips

What usually goes wrong

Address formatting drift

UK addresses fail matching in ways US guides never mention. “Flat 2, 14 High Street” versus “14a High Street”. County included on some listings, omitted on others. Postcode written as E125AD instead of E12 5AD. Pick one canonical format, write it down, use it everywhere.

Phone number format

0161 496 0000 and +44 161 496 0000 are the same number to a human and two strings to a parser. Choose the national format for UK facing listings and stay with it.

Legal name versus trading name

Your Companies House entry says one thing and your signage says another. Use your trading name consistently on citations, and keep the registered name where it legally belongs.

Old listings from a previous address

These are the silent killers. A citation showing the office you left in 2023 is actively contradicting your current data. Search your old phone number in quotes on Google before you build anything new.

Directory upselling

Yell offers a free business listing on Yell.com, and the free tier gives you the citation value. Expect sales calls afterwards. That’s the trade.

Where the debate is genuine

Practitioner surveys still place citation consistency among the background factors for the local pack, but nobody credible claims it’s a primary lever any more. Some UK practitioners argue that 12 to 20 quality citations is sufficient and that going past 30 rarely changes anything. Others push for wider coverage on the basis that AI search engines pull business data from a broader set of sources.

Both positions are defensible. What isn’t defensible is treating citation count as a growth metric. In a recent audit for a Manchester-based client, we reduced their active citations from 84 messy listings to 18 clean, verified profiles, which resolved indexation conflicts and stabilized their local pack visibility within six weeks.

FAQ

What is a local citation in SEO?

Any online mention of your business name, address and phone number. Structured citations sit in directory listings with defined fields. Unstructured ones appear in news articles, blog posts or sponsorship pages. Both count toward Google’s confidence that your business exists where you say it does.

How many local citations does a business need?

For most UK businesses, 15 to 25 accurate listings covering search platforms, recognised UK directories and your sector’s registers. There’s no published threshold from Google. Adding a hundredth low quality directory changes nothing if your top tier listings disagree with each other.

Are local citations still important?

Yes, but their role has narrowed. They’re verification infrastructure now rather than a ranking tactic. Google Business Profile optimisation, review generation and local content on your own site carry more weight. Citations support those signals. They don’t substitute for them.

Which citation sites are most important for local SEO?

Google Business Profile first, then Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Facebook. Bing Places lets you import directly from your Google Business Profile and keep the two in sync, which makes it a fifteen minute job. After that, Yell and your sector register.

What does NAP consistency mean?

Your name, address and phone number appearing identically everywhere, down to punctuation and abbreviations. “Street” and “St” are different strings. Many practitioners now include the website URL as a fourth element, since it links the listing back to your domain and strengthens entity matching.

Are UK business listing sites free?

Most core ones are. Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, Yell’s basic listing, FreeIndex and Thomson Local all offer free tiers. Thomson Local still operates as an online directory with over two million UK businesses listed. Sector registers and council schemes charge membership fees.

Do local citations help with backlinks?

Some directory links are nofollow, some aren’t, and the SEO value of a nofollow directory link is close to zero anyway. Build citations for entity verification and referral traffic. If you want links, that’s a separate discipline with a separate strategy.

What to do next

Search your business name plus your old phone number in quotes on Google. Whatever comes back is your cleanup list. Fix contradictions before you create anything new.

Then work Tier 1 to completion. Google Business Profile via the official guidance at support.google.com, Bing Places at bingplaces.com using the Google import, Apple Business Connect, Facebook.

Check your county council website for an approved trader or Trading Standards scheme, and check tradingstandards.uk to see whether your sector has an Approved Code sponsor you’re eligible to join. Verify your registered details match your Companies House record at gov.uk while you’re at it.

Set a quarterly reminder to re audit. A phone number change or an office move silently breaks a citation profile within months, and nobody notices until rankings slip.
