How Much Does an SEO Retainer Cost in the UK?

SEO Retainer Cost UK: What Actually Moves the Number

By Ryan Mitchell, Head of SEO at WebRanko · Published 29 August 2026

SEO retainer cost UK sits between roughly £500 and £5,000 per month for most businesses, with SMEs clustering around £1,500 to £2,500. But the band is the least useful part of the answer. What matters is what changes a £1,500 month into a £4,000 month, and the honest answer is hours, competition and the state of your site.

Let’s do the arithmetic nobody publishes.

What an hour costs before anyone makes a penny

The average UK SEO specialist salary is £35,197, based on 403 salaries reported to Indeed and updated in July 2026. London runs higher at around £39,398.

Add employer national insurance, pension contributions and holiday cover, and the true cost to an agency is roughly 30% above salary. Call it £45,800. Divide by the realistic billable hours in a year, somewhere near 1,700 once you strip out holiday, sickness, training and internal work, and you get about £27 an hour in raw cost.

Now the agency has to cover office, software, management, sales, and margin. The standard multiplier lands somewhere between 2.5 and 3 times raw cost.

That produces a billed rate of £67 to £81 an hour for a mid level practitioner. Which is exactly where the observed UK market sits, with experienced consultants typically billing between £75 and £200 an hour.

So here’s your conversion table.

Monthly retainer Hours at £75/hr Hours at £120/hr What that realistically covers
£500 6.7 4.2 Reporting and light maintenance. Not a strategy
£1,000 13.3 8.3 One content piece, basic technical monitoring, reporting
£1,500 20 12.5 Content, on page work, some link outreach, reporting
£2,500 33 20.8 Multi channel work with a strategist genuinely involved
£4,000 53 33 Dedicated team time, digital PR, ongoing technical build
£8,000 107 67 Multiple specialists, effectively an outsourced department

Meaningful SEO generally requires 15 to 40 hours a month depending on scope. Look at the table again. That’s why sub £1,000 retainers struggle. It isn’t greed. It’s that six hours doesn’t reach the floor.

The five things that move you up a band

Competition in your sector

Ranking for plumber in Swindon and ranking for personal injury solicitor in London are not the same job. Legal, finance and healthcare command premiums of 30 to 50% because every competitor is already investing hard.

The state of your site

A technically sound site needs less remedial work than one with crawl errors, duplicate content and slow load times. Legacy sites carrying real technical debt commonly need £5,000 to £15,000 of upfront remediation before ongoing optimisation can even start. This is the driver that most often turns a £1,500 quote into a £4,000 one, and it’s the one buyers never see coming.

Geographic scope

One town costs less than five cities, which costs less than national. Multi location businesses typically pay a base fee plus a per location increment.

Site size

Fifty pages and fifty thousand pages are different technical problems. Ecommerce pricing scales with catalogue size for exactly this reason.

AI search work

AEO and GEO now appear as a separate line on most UK invoices, typically adding 20 to 30% to a traditional retainer. Some agencies bundle it. Ask which, because the answer changes your comparison. Some providers now report on AI citation rate alongside rankings.

The five things that move you up a band

Why London bills 20 to 40% more

Part of it is straightforward cost base. London SEO salaries run above the national average, and so does everything else.

But the bigger part is competitive density. Ranking commercial intent keywords in London requires substantially more link acquisition than an equivalent regional campaign, because there are simply more well funded competitors defending the same terms. You’re not paying for a postcode. You’re paying for more hours against harder competition.

Whether that premium is worth it depends entirely on whether you’re actually competing in London. A Manchester business hiring a London agency to rank in Manchester is paying the premium and receiving none of the benefit. That gap is narrowing as remote delivery matures, but it hasn’t closed.

What usually goes wrong

Comparing quotes without comparing hours

Two proposals at £2,000 can contain twenty hours and eight hours respectively. Ask for the hours. If a provider won’t state them, that tells you something.

Missing the VAT

Most UK agencies quote plus VAT. A £2,500 retainer is £3,000 out of the bank account. Budget accordingly.

Buying a retainer when you need a project

If your problem is a broken migration or a technical mess, a fixed scope project fixes it faster and cheaper than twelve months of retainer. Retainers suit ongoing compounding work.

Twelve month lock ins without break clauses

Long contracts sometimes reduce the monthly rate by 10 to 15%. That’s a fair trade if there’s a performance break clause. Without one, it isn’t.

Where the debate is genuine

There’s real disagreement about whether AI tooling should have lowered prices. One position holds that routine work like briefs, audits and reporting has dropped from 15 to 20 hours a month down to 5 to 8, and savings should reach clients. The counter position is that strategy and original content remain labour intensive, and the freed hours have been absorbed by new AI search work rather than returned as discount.

Both are partly true. UK prices have risen 15 to 30% since 2024 despite the tooling, which suggests scope expanded faster than efficiency did.

FAQ

How much should a small business spend on SEO per month?

Most UK small businesses land between £750 and £2,000. Local single location campaigns can work from £500. Below that you’re buying reporting rather than work. Match the spend to your competition, not to what feels comfortable, because an underfunded campaign in a competitive sector wastes the whole budget.

What does an SEO retainer include?

Typically technical monitoring and fixes, content production, on page optimisation, link acquisition, and reporting. The split between them is what you’re actually choosing. Ask for the monthly hour allocation per activity. A proposal that lists deliverables without hours is difficult to hold anyone to.

Why is SEO so expensive in the UK?

It’s mostly salaries. A mid level specialist costs an agency around £45,800 a year fully loaded, which works out near £27 an hour in raw cost before any overhead or margin. The £75 to £200 hourly rates you see quoted are that number multiplied through a normal agency cost structure.

How many hours of work is a £1,000 SEO retainer?

Roughly 8 to 13 hours depending on the seniority of who does the work. That’s enough for one solid content piece plus monitoring and reporting, or a focused technical sprint. It isn’t enough for content, technical work and link building simultaneously.

Do SEO agencies charge VAT?

UK agencies registered for VAT charge it at 20% on top of the quoted fee, and most quote excluding VAT. If you’re VAT registered yourself you’ll reclaim it, so the real cost is the headline figure. If you’re not, add 20% to every quote before comparing.

Why do London SEO agencies charge more?

Higher salary costs, and genuinely harder competition. London commercial keywords need more link acquisition than regional equivalents. The premium is justified if you’re competing in London and questionable if you’re not.

Is a cheap SEO retainer worth trying?

Depends what it is. A £500 local retainer covering Google Business Profile and citations can produce real results for a single location business. A £500 retainer promising national rankings across competitive terms cannot, and the shortcuts taken to appear productive at that price sometimes cause damage that costs more to undo.

What to do next

Before requesting quotes, run your site through Google Search Console and check the Page Indexing report. If a meaningful share of your pages are excluded, you have technical debt, and that will change every quote you receive. Better to know first.

Ask each provider for three things in writing: monthly hours, the split of those hours across activity, and whether AI search work is included or billed separately. Any provider unwilling to give you those numbers has told you what you needed to know.

Check whether you’re VAT registered before comparing figures, since that changes the real cost of every quote by a fifth.

Then judge the quotes against the hours table above rather than against each other. Two proposals can only be compared once you know what work sits behind each number. WebRanko works to this model.
