Cookies get a bad reputation — mostly because websites use them in ways that feel intrusive and then bury the explanation in fifty pages of legal text. This page explains exactly what cookies we use on webranko.co.uk, why we use them, and how you can control them. No filler, no padding.
This policy is part of our broader Privacy Policy. If you want to understand how we handle personal data more generally, that’s the place to look.
What a Cookie Actually Is
A cookie is a small text file that a website saves to your device when you visit. That’s genuinely all it is. It can’t run programmes, it can’t access other files on your computer, and it can’t do anything on its own. What it does do is remember things — your preferences, whether you’ve visited before, how you’re using the site.
Some cookies are essential. Some are useful. Some are primarily there to help companies track your behaviour across the internet. We’re going to tell you exactly which category each of ours falls into.
The Cookies We Use
We use three categories of cookies on this site. Here’s what each one does.
Necessary Cookies
These are the cookies the website needs to function properly. You can’t opt out of them — not because we’re being heavy-handed about it, but because without them the site genuinely breaks.
| Cookie | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|
wr_cookie_consent |
Stores your cookie preference so we don’t show the banner on every visit | 1 year |
That’s it. One necessary cookie. We haven’t loaded this category with things that aren’t actually necessary.
Analytics Cookies
If you’ve accepted analytics cookies, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how people use this site. We’re looking at things like:
- Which pages get the most visits
- How long people spend reading different sections
- Roughly where visitors are coming from (country/region level, not your exact location)
- What devices and browsers people use
None of this tells us who you are. It’s anonymised, aggregated data — patterns, not people. We use it to make the site better and to understand whether our content is actually useful.
If you decline analytics cookies, Google Analytics doesn’t load at all. We won’t try to sneak it in through the back door.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_ga |
Google Analytics | Distinguishes unique users | 2 years |
_ga_* |
Google Analytics | Maintains session state | 2 years |
_gid |
Google Analytics | Distinguishes users (short-term) | 24 hours |
Google’s own privacy policy governs how they handle data collected through these cookies. You can read it at policies.google.com/privacy.
Marketing Cookies
Marketing cookies are used for advertising — specifically for remarketing, which means showing relevant ads to people who’ve already visited our site when they’re browsing elsewhere online.
These only activate if you explicitly accept them. We won’t run remarketing on anyone who hasn’t said yes.
| Cookie | Set by | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
_gcl_au |
Google Ads | Conversion tracking and remarketing | 90 days |
_fbp |
Meta (Facebook) | Remarketing via Meta platforms | 90 days |
If you’d rather not have these running, declining marketing cookies at the banner is all you need to do.
How to Manage Your Cookie Preferences
On This Site
We use a consent banner when you first visit webranko.co.uk. You can accept all cookies, reject all non-essential cookies, or customise exactly which categories you allow.
Changed your mind? You can update your preferences at any time — just click the Cookie Preferences link in the footer. Your new choice takes effect immediately.
In Your Browser
Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies directly. Here’s where to find those settings:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions
Bear in mind that blocking all cookies at browser level will break things on most websites — including things like staying logged in, remembering preferences, and so on. Doing it through our consent banner is more precise.
Google Analytics Opt-Out
If you want to opt out of Google Analytics tracking across all websites — not just ours — Google offers a browser add-on for that: tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
What We Don’t Do With Cookies
A few things worth saying explicitly:
- We don’t use cookies to collect sensitive personal data like health information, financial details, or anything in that territory
- We don’t sell cookie data or share it with data brokers
- We don’t use cross-site tracking cookies that follow you around the internet beyond basic remarketing
- We don’t use cookies to build profiles on individuals without consent
Third-Party Cookies
Any third-party cookies on this site — Google, Meta — are governed by those companies’ own privacy policies. We’ve listed the relevant links above. We’ve chosen these tools carefully, but we can’t control what those companies do with their own data. If that concerns you, declining those cookie categories is the straightforward solution.
Changes to This Policy
If we add a new tool that sets cookies, or remove one, we’ll update this page and the date at the top. We won’t add new cookie categories without updating the consent banner to ask for your permission first.
